The “Heritage Mediators” project implemented by the association Bel Horizon d’Oran and benefiting from a contribution of more than € 51 000 within the framework of the EU-funded programme HERITAGE Algeria, will produce a publication on the cultural heritage of the city of Oran entitled “Oran heritage”.
The publication seeks to highlight the tangible and intangible heritage of the capital of the western part of the country and its history. It will be published in October 2017 and will be the first in a series dedicated to the civilisational history of the city of Oran intended to be a working tool for researchers and a guide for tourists.
The project also foresees the training of heritage intermediaries, and particularly, the training of thirty Master’s students from the Department of Architecture of the University of Science and Technology of Oran (USTO), which started last year. This training, to continue until next October, is dedicated to the knowledge of the international charters on heritage as well as the Algerian regulations regarding heritage preservation, its protection and promotion. These courses are supported by field trips to the archaeological and historical sites of the region.
The Heritage Algeria programme aims to support the inclusion of cultural heritage as a development tool in Algeria and to contribute to its identification, protection and development. It also seeks to build capacities in the sector at central and local level and provide technical support.
