The European Union recalls the European Council Conclusions of 17 October 2024 and expresses grave concern about the recent escalation of conflict in Lebanon and along the Blue Line.

The EU reiterates its call for an immediate ceasefire (in Lebanon), and for all parties to commit and work towards the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701 and a diplomatic settlement. Rocket attacks by Hezbollah must stop. Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected.

Two weeks ago, the EU has allocated extra EUR 40 million in humanitarian assistance, bringing it to the total of 104 million this year, moreover, a humanitarian bridge operation has been launched.

The EU condemns all attacks against UN peacekeeping missions. It expresses particularly grave concern regarding the attack against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which left several peacekeepers wounded. These attacks must stop immediately. All actors have an obligation to take necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and to respect the inviolability of UN premises at all times.

The troops and other personnel of UNIFIL, to which sixteen EU Member States currently contribute, are working under difficult conditions in the defence of international peace and security.

The EU calls for the protection of the rich cultural heritage of Lebanon, and its education and scientific infrastructure, and remains committed to addressing the dire humanitarian situation.
