The European Union Delegation issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Jordan:
On 4 March 2018, the Ministry of Interior of Jordan and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) initiated a new exercise to formalise the status of Syrian refugees residing informally in urban areas in Jordan. The campaign will run until 27 September 2018, directed to Syrians who left refugee camps without a permit before 1 July 2017 and have not returned since then, in addition to Syrians who entered the country without registering with the UNHCR.
The EU and its Member States welcome this initiative. Proper registration and documentation of Syrian refugees living in Jordan is essential for refugees to enjoy their rights, access services and for the efficiency of the national and international response. The EU has advocated and financed projects to support undocumented and unregistered refugees in Jordan since 2016.
This initiative is a positive step in the context of the forthcoming Second Brussels International Conference on “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region”, which will take place on 24-25 April 2018 in Brussels.
