At the recent National Consultation Workshop on Green Hydrogen in Cairo, Dr. Amr El Baradie, General Manager for Green Hydrogen at the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and member of the MED-GEM Network Industry Advisory Board, shared his vision for the development of this emerging industry in Egypt and beyond. “The MED-GEM initiative, funded by the European Union, is an outstanding platform that facilitates strategic dialogue between Southern Mediterranean countries and Europe,” said Dr. El Baradie. “It lays the foundation for building a global green hydrogen industry.” With its abundant natural resources and strategic geographic position, Egypt is well-positioned to become a major player in this field.

While significant progress has been made on regulatory frameworks, financing remains a key challenge. “Who will take on the financial risks of these massive investments?” Dr. El Baradie questioned. According to him, the answer lies in international cooperation and experience sharing. “We are still at the beginning of the learning curve. Working together will allow us to overcome obstacles and achieve our shared goals.” With an ambitious goal of generating 114 GW of renewable energy, Egypt aims not only to meet its own energy needs but also to become a key supplier of green hydrogen to Europe. “It’s not just about exporting; it’s also about integrating green hydrogen into the local economy, which is essential for a sustainable energy transition,” he added.

Dr. El Baradie concluded on an optimistic note: “This industry is still young, but thanks to initiatives like MED-GEM and cooperation with the European Union, we have a unique opportunity to shape a sustainable and prosperous energy future for Egypt and the world.” This structured dialogue between national and international stakeholders highlights the importance of a collaborative approach to tackling technical, financial, and policy challenges while seizing the opportunities offered by green hydrogen.
