The European Union has been following recent developments in Tunisia with concern, in particular the simultaneous arrest of several civil society figures, journalists and political activists.
Civil society associations and the media play a fundamental role in all democracies by participating directly in countries’ economic and social development. Freedoms of expression and association, as well as the independence of the judiciary, are guaranteed by the Tunisian Constitution and constitute the basis of our partnership.
Tunisia has distinguished itself by the dynamism of its civil society, and the European Union will continue to work jointly with associations in order to support their activities in compliance with the legal framework in place.
The EU Delegation has asked the Tunisian authorities locally for clarification of the reasons for these arrests.
