The EU Delegation to Algeria organized on 16 September, with the cooperation of the MEDIA CONNECT network, a masterclass on the presentation of television news bulletins. The workshop received a group of young journalists and media students from different Wilayas and brought them together at the EU Delegation’s headquarters in Algiers for a practical experience on how to present news, starting from how to stand in front of the camera to dealing with live broadcasts and drafting TV bulletins. The objective was clear:  Enhancing the journalistic skills of the new generation and providing them with field experience close to the media work reality.

A new generation in front of the camera

In a lively atmosphere filled with high ambitions, the EU Delegation to Algeria hosted on 16 September a masterclass on anchoring TV news bulletins, held in partnership with the Media Connect Network in the framework of the EU Neighbourhood South programme. The aim was more than just a technical training: to give the new generation of young journalists and media students a chance to discover the backstage of this profession and learn from a hands-on experience about media work.

Algerian journalist Reem Ammari led the session with clear experience and warmth, offering participants a realistic glimpse of the daily challenges faced by news anchors, from standing in front of the camera to handling live broadcasts and crafting news accurately and smoothly.

The workshop was attended by a group of young journalists and media students from different Wilayas of Algeria, who met and exchanged experiences in an interactive environment that combined passion and knowledge. The session focused on four main themes: writing a TV bulletin, standing in front of the camera, live broadcasting, and the articulation of words, essential elements for a successful news bulletin.

The meeting was special not only from a professional perspective, but also for the collective spirit that prevailed among the participants, and the safe space that was provided for them to experiment, make mistakes, and learn. This training day turned into a space for exchanging ideas, building trust, and opening new horizons for a generation that believes in the power of the media and its ability to make change.

Renewed commitment to support youth media

The workshop was a clear message from the EU Delegation to Algeria that affirms its continued commitment to supporting youth media and creating spaces for learning and exchange. In his opening remarks, H.E. the EU Ambassador to Algeria, Mr. Diego Milado, stressed the importance of empowering young people and providing them with opportunities to acquire practical skills that enhance their presence in the media landscape. “Such initiatives represent an opportunity for Algerian youth to acquire practical skills that enhance their presence in the media landscape and open the way for them to be positive change-makers in their communities,” said Miladou.

The Ambassador added “we are ready to strengthen our cooperation with MEDIA CONNECT in order to create more opportunities for the Algerian Youth, because we believe that investing in their capabilities is an investment in a brighter future for all.”

Passion and experience that inspires the new generation

As for the journalist Reem Ammari, who directed the masterclass, she expressed her happiness to share her experience with the new generation of journalists. “I had the privilege to share my experience with young journalists in TV newscasts, where we discussed how to build trust in front of the camera, control nerves during live broadcasts, and adjust the articulation of letters,” she said.

She added with a smile that reflected her pride in what she saw: “What made me most happy was that I found in the participants a great passion and determination to learn, and this made me confident that the future of media in Algeria is in promising hands.”

The participants did not hide their enthusiasm after the workshop, describing the experience as a turning point in their careers, and a rare opportunity to dive into the world of media from within.

Maria Hind Haddad, a media student who participated in the masterclass, said,This masterclass was more than just an opportunity to meet the journalist Reem Ammari and learn from her experience. It took us into the real world of media, as if we were already in a newscast studio. It was a rich, valuable and informative experience, and I can only thank the journalist Reem Ammari and the EU Delegation to Algeria for this outstanding initiative.”

The European Union and the media… Partnership to create an influential generation

This live experience reflected the positive and pivotal role that the European Union plays in Algeria through its field projects and programmes aimed at supporting and empowering young people. The EU seeks to make a tangible impact on the lives of individuals and communities by giving them the tools and knowledge that make them active in the development process, whether in the field of media or in other sectors such as entrepreneurship, the environment, education and culture.

The masterclass is part of a series of initiatives supported by the EU Neighbours South, through MEDIA CONNECT, which works to enhance journalistic skills and build the capacity of young media professionals across the countries of the South.

Thanks to this initiative, Algerian youth have had a unique opportunity to dive behind the scenes of television news and discover the human side of a journalism that seems simple from the outside, but actually requires discipline, concentration, and a high sense of responsibility. Participants came out of the experience more aware of the importance of the media as a force capable of influencing and change, and more determined to be part of this change that the new generation in Algeria and the region aspires to.
