A total of 290 migrants were rescued at sea yesterday by vessels operating under the EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia Task Force. The migrants were in three dinghies that had left from the Libyan coast during the night.

After a Spanish aircraft had spotted one of the dinghies during a patrol and surveillance flight, a German supply-ship and a British frigate saved respectively 236 and 54 migrants – 262 men and 28 women.

An additional 116 migrants were transferred to the German ship from an Italian Ship taking part in the Mare Sicuro Operation. Only a few cases of not dangerous hypothermia were identified among the 406 migrants, who are now at safe on board the German Frigate heading towards the port of Augusta in Italy.

EUNAVFOR MED operation SOPHIA is currently executing the second phase of its operations which includes the interception, boarding, search, seizure and diversion of smugglers’ vessels in the high seas in the Central Mediterranean Sea.

In 4 months, EUNAVFOR MED assets have been involved in 27 rescue operations saving more than 5,700 lives. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
