Gathered in Milan, the members of the Environment, Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency Working Group (RES WG) discussed their key 2024 report on “Regulatory framework for the development of energy storage and distributed flexibility resources”.
The Group members acknowledged the study’s first results providing a picture of the energy storage regulatory framework existing in MEDREG countries.
The Group also unveiled the implementation status of distributed flexibility resources (DFR), the progress of their implementation and the drivers for DFR implementation in the Mediterranean region.
The report’s objective is to analyse the present market conditions and potential for energy storage for gas and electricity and distributed flexibility resources, offering insights into their practical implementation, featuring Mediterranean case studies, and providing recommendations for regulatory enhancement and further technological development.
The report represents a topic of high importance in the region to achieve the decarbonisation of the energy sector.
In addition, the Group recapped the recent and upcoming RES and energy efficiency support activities and training organised by MEDREG, such as the two experts’ mission for the Algerian member CREG on incentivizing the engagement of the private sector in climate certifications, and on financing scheme and bankability of RE projects in developing countries, held in October in Milan.
The study visit for MPC Members on the development of decentralised production, self-consumption of electricity and electric mobility organised earlier this month in Athens was also mentioned.
Finally, the Group praised the success of the joint ECRB-MEDREG workshop held in September on “Promoting Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency” in which more than 40 participants learned about mechanisms and strategies to integrate renewable energy and improve energy efficiency in electricity systems.
