On Thursday 7 April 2016, European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella, began a visit to Algeria, where he met with Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal and government members to discuss the need for a common strategy for the Mediterranean Sea. The visit follows the agreement reached in Catania (Sicily) in February 2016 by EU Mediterranean Ministers that urgent action is needed to reverse the worrying decline of fish stocks in the Mediterranean and surmounting pressure on the competitiveness of the fisheries sector, according to an EU press release.
