Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, will travel to Cairo on 31 May and 1 June to discuss the state of play of and outlook for EU-Egypt relations with the Egyptian authorities. It will be an opportunity to exchange views on the implementation of the EU’s Economic and Investment Plan for the Southern Neighbourhood that aims to invest in the real economy, create new jobs and growth, accelerate the green and digital transitions, improve connectivity, create better investment conditions and offer a perspective for the youth.
In this context, Commissioner Várhelyi will meet with different interlocutors of the Government of Egypt, as well as with representatives of the European and International Financing Institutions. He will also attend, on behalf of the European Commission, the signing ceremony of the flagship project to expand and upgrade the Helwan Wastewater Treatment Plan, supported by the Economic and Investment Plan.
Discussions will notably focus on efforts to tackle global food insecurity due to a rise in food and other commodity prices following Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. Egypt will benefit from an indicative €100 million from the €225 million support package proposed by the Commission to support its Southern neighbours to mitigate the socio-economic effects of the increased food insecurity.
