Adopting eco-innovations is both good for the business and the environment. In SwitchMed, UNIDO promoted eco-innovative solution from the EU that now help the leather industry in Egypt and Tunisia to become more resource efficient, profitable and clean.
One of the presented eco-innovations is from INESCOP which developed a new tanning technique based on oxazolidine (OXATAN). This allows, on the one hand, a reduction in the environmental impact, and on the other hand, the production of high-performance leathers with properties that can be suitable for footwear, upholstery and leather goods sectors.
The SwitchMed sustainable consumption and production programme aims to promote a switch by the Mediterranean economies towards sustainable consumption and production patterns and green economy, including low-emission development, through demonstration and dissemination of methods that improve resource and energy efficiency.
