Yesterday, the Presidents and Commissioners of Mediterranean Energy Regulatory Authorities gathered in Rome to exchange approaches and good practices with regards to renewable energy development and the growing role of gas, which imply important challenges and require the adaption of the energy regulation from both a policy and regulatory perspective.

Organised at the initiative of Mr. Stefano Besseghini, MEDREG Vice President and President of the Italian Energy Regulator ARERA, this meeting was the first of its kind and was meant to foster cooperation at the highest level of national regulatory authorities, leading to the development of a shared vision for the changing role of Regulators in the Mediterranean energy market.

Participants raised country-specific problems and questions, to which fellow Presidents answered in the framework of three sessions of discussion and interaction that brought together the different stances and challenges of the Mediterranean countries.

In the margin of this Presidents’ meeting, MEDREG held in Rome a joint training with the Association of Mediterranean Electricity Transmission System Operators (Med-TSO), meant to build the knowledge on infrastructure investments and the bilateral dialogue between the staff of regulators and TSOs.

MEDREG is the Association of Mediterranean Energy Regulators, which brings together 27 regulators from 23 countries, spanning the European Union (EU), the Balkans and North Africa. Mediterranean regulators work together to promote greater compatibility of the regional energy markets and legislation, seeking progressive market integration in the Euro-Mediterranean basin.

MEDREG promotes a transparent, stable and compatible regulatory framework in the Mediterranean Region fostering infrastructure investments, consumer protection, and enhanced energy cooperation. Based on a bottom-up approach, MEDREG acts as a collaborative platform for regulators from the Northern and the Southern shore of the Mediterranean to exchange technical knowledge and good practices while supporting each other to reinforce their regulatory capacity.
