The European Union (EU) Delegation to Egypt in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research organized a workshop on Tuesday to mark the launch of the Work Programme 2018-2020 of Horizon 2020, the EU’s research and innovation funding programme.

Horizon 2020 is the largest multinational programme dedicated to research and innovation and it is “open to the world”. Researchers, universities, research organisations, companies and non-governmental organisations from across the globe can apply to participate in the activities of the Work Programme carried out mainly through calls for proposals. Under Horizon 2020, Egypt so far participated in 31 grant agreements. These projects cover collaborative research actions in areas including food and sustainable agriculture, environment and water management.

The new calls represent a major investment of €30 billion. These offer an extraordinary occasion for the scientific community and innovators in partner countries to tap on the opportunities offered by Horizon 2020, working together with counterparts from the EU and beyond in areas of mutual interest.

Head of EU Delegation to Egypt Ambassador Ivan Surkoš said, “2018 marks 10 years since the EU-Egypt science and technology agreement came into force. We remain to believe that scientific cooperation is one of the most important pillars of our cooperation.” Ambassador Surkoš argued that science and innovation can provide answers to major societal challenges which affect all of us directly such as food security or water resources management. “The EU programme Horizon 2020 puts in pace the tools to ensure further collaboration in areas of mutual interest and shared benefits,” he added.
