EU High Representative for foreign affairs Federica Mogherini took part yesterday along with representatives from more than 70 countries in a major conference in Paris on how to achieve peace in the Middle East.  The Middle East Peace Process is on the agenda of today’s EU foreign affairs Council, chaired by Federica Mogherini, as well as Syria.

Today’s Council will focus on Syria. The High Representative will update the Ministers on the work being done, on the EU’s initiative with the regional powers and the discussions she held in Geneva last week, especially with the new Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres and [the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria] Staffan de Mistura but also with the Turkish Minister.

On the Middle East, the EU is leading efforts to kickstart talks with the aim of a peace settlement based on two states and has played a leading role through its involvement in the Middle East Quartet. Ministers will brainstorm on the EU’s role, especially in relation with the Quartet and Arab countries.
