Innovative programming ideas which could help young people to make their voices heard were among the issues discussed at a two-day conference in Ramallah this week.
Organised by two EU-funded projects, MedMedia and NET-MED Youth, the event was attended by around 30 representatives from the Palestine Broadcasting Corporation, leading universities and civil society organisations. It was part of a long-term initiative entitled “Youth on Screen” which was launched in Amman in April this year.
The Ramallah conference was the second in a series of national meetings aimed at encouraging TV programme-makers to engage with young audiences and stimulate creativity.
The EU-funded MedMedia project aims to create an enabling environment for media reforms in the Southern Mediterranean region. It is part of the €17 million EU programme “Media and culture for development in the Southern Mediterranean” which aims at supporting the media and culture reform processes in the region.
MedMedia focuses on media legislation, regulation, programming, strategy and leadership with a view to helping state media fulfil their public service mandate and compete with the commercial sector. It will also work to build public trust by strengthening the media’s role as an independent watchdog and a forum for democratic debate.
NET-MED Youth aims to improve the access and effective participation of young people in mainstreaming their priorities into legislation and national planning in the Southern Mediterranean Partner countries. Specifically, it aims to build the capacities of youth organisations in ENP South countries and to enhance networking among them in order to reduce the fragmentation of efforts and harness the collective potential of young people in achieving democratic transition towards active citizenship, political participation and social inclusion.
