Representatives from EU and Mediterranean partner countries are meeting in Valetta in Malta on 21-22 February for the first high-level meeting of the Euromed Police IV project. The meeting aims to present and endorse the ‘Euromed Cooperation Priorities to Increase Citizen Security’. Ultimately, the Euromed Police project intends to facilitate a common understanding on the threats affecting citizens’ security across both shores of the Mediterranean. 

The priorities include: counter terrorism, irregular migration supported by criminal networks and trafficking of human beings, cybercrime, and cyber terrorism, including the use of social media for incitement and recruitment purposes.

The priorities are the result of thorough consultations held between the project team and the partner countries since the project began in February 2016. Once endorsed, these priorities will form the basis of actions to be implemented throughout the project, including capacity-building for law enforcement forces. 

Delegations from each participating country have been joined in Malta by the project’s partner institutions, notably Europol, Cepol, and Interpol, which provide essential support and advice to the project to ensure the sustainability of the tools and mechanisms developed.

The aim of the Euromed Police IV project is to increase citizens’ security across the Euro-Mediterranean area through the strengthening of cooperation on security issues between the Southern Mediterranean partner countries, as well as between these countries and the EU Member States. It builds on the achievements of the previous phases of the project. The project runs from 2016-2020 with a budget of €5 million.
