The EU’s European Investment Bank (EIB) confirms its financial support in the amount of €123 million (approximately 416 million dinars) for the construction of the new Bizerte bridge, in the North of Tunisia, in partnership with the African Development Bank (ADB), which is lending €122 million, and the Tunisian State. Since its launch in 2016, this project has benefited from EU support through a donation of around €3 million (more than 10 million dinars) intended for feasibility studies and the design phase.
This initiative aims to bring about significant improvements in mobility and quality of life for inhabitants of the region. Strategically located between Lake Bizerte and the Mediterranean, this ambitious project aims to build a modern bridge 2.07 kilometres long and 56 metres high, with a total budget of around 750 million dinars (approximately €250 million). The signing of the construction contract marks the start of work, with a construction period estimated at 38 months for the bridge and 27 months for the associated roads and interchanges.
This project is crucial for the city of Bizerte, since it aims to channel traffic away from the city centre, reduce air pollution and decongest urban traffic. The construction of this bridge is an important step towards the sustainable development of the region and the preparation of the future for new generations, reflecting the commitment of the EIB and the EU to supporting modern and sustainable infrastructure in Tunisia.
