The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the Commission, Josep Borrell, spoke on the telephone with Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed.

Their exchange largely focused on recent developments in Tunisia, in particular the appointment of Najla Bouden Romdhane as Prime Minister and the formation of her government. The High Representative stressed that the latter must rise to the economic and public health challenges facing the country, also asserting that he hopes the appointments will be a significant first step towards consolidating democratic gains.

In this context, while reaffirming the European Union’s respect for Tunisian sovereignty, the High Representative highlighted the importance of establishing a clear timeline for the restoration of constitutional rule in Tunisia, based on the separation of powers, respect for the rule of law and parliamentary democracy and the protection of fundamental freedoms, and resulting from transparent and inclusive dialogue that takes into account the will and aspirations of the Tunisian people.

The High Representative took note of President Saïed’s comments, in particular his willingness to engage in a national dialogue and ensure this period of exceptional measures is as short as possible.

The High Representative restated the importance of the strategic partnership with Tunisia and the European Union’s commitment to supporting the Tunisian people at this time of pandemic and economic difficulty.
