UfM Deputy Secretary General Delphine Borione expressed the commitment of the Union for the Mediterranean for a closer cooperation with the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) at the Euromed Summit of Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions 2015 held in Brussels earlier this week.

The discussions focused on the situation in the region 20 years after the Barcelona Process, the new European Neighbourhood Policy, the role of social partners in the consolidation of political democracy, and migration. All participants in the EESC Summit emphasised the need for collective actions involving all the Euro-Mediterranean actors to meet the major challenges faced by the region.

The EESC and the UfM signed a Memorandum of Understanding in January 2015 for a mutual reflexion and joint work on areas of common concern, including job creation, women’s socio-economic empowerment, entrepreneurship, social economy, food security and climate change, areas where the UfM is developing a consistent number of cooperation projects, especially in the eastern and southern parts of the Mediterranean.
