Brief Description

The project will strengthen and further develop the marine protected areas network and will support the achievement of the «Good Environmental Status» (GES) of the Mediterranean Sea.

Countries covered: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya , Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia

Objectives

Outcome 1: Enhanced level of capacity in each country to report on the common indicators linked to the Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme of the Mediterranean (IMAP);

Outcome 2: Harmonized monitoring and assessment of IMAP common indicators for a) biodiversity and non-indigenous species; b) pollution and marine litter; and c) hydrography.

Outcome 3: Enhanced implementation of the governance and policies which relate to the Marine Protected Areas in the Southern Mediterranean region;

Outcome 4: Improved on-site Marine Protected Areas management and identified mechanisms that ensure their sustainability.

Actions in brief

The project will strengthen and further develop the Mediterranean network of Marine Protected Areas.

It will also support the achievement of good environmental status of the Mediterranean Sea and will assess the progress towards this status.

This will be achieved by:

  1. Supporting the implementation of the Integrated Management and Assessment Programme for the Mediterranean Sea; and
  2. Improving and supporting the development of a comprehensive and coherent Mediterranean network of well-managed and monitored Marine Protected Areas.
