EuroMed Rights launch a new report: Turning the tide – Key learnings and strategic path for navigating anti-gender backlash in the euro Mediterranean region.
Over the past decade, the Euro-Mediterranean region has experienced a surge in authoritarianism and conservatism, marked by a deliberate offensive against feminism and the LGBTQIA+ community. Between 2023 and 2024, major political changes accentuated this decline, slowing progress towards gender equality and, in many cases, exacerbating gender inequalities and racial discrimination. State-led reaffirmations of patriarchal norms and religious ideologies have targeted feminist movements and LGBTQIA+ communities. This has led to crackdowns on women human rights defenders and the suppression of basic civic and cultural rights. Both shores of the Mediterranean have witnessed large-scale attacks on LGBTQIA+ individuals’ rights and safety.
This report highlights the main trends observed in EuroMed Rights’ monitoring of anti-gender backlash in the Euro-Mediterranean region from July 2023 to July 2024. It also proposes strategies to counter these backlashes.
