Gender equality in the job market (Lynne Tehini)

In Jordan, statistics indicate a very low participation of women in the economy despite the high proportion of educated women. The government, together with civil society and other stakeholders has made considerable law amendments to enable and encourage women to access finance and resources, to launch their own enterprises and have the same rights as men. Many measures have been voted to reduce the challenges and barriers that discourage women from participating more actively in the economy. This however did not yet help to shift the status quo.
What are the societal factors or other obstacles blocking this most needed change? Why are the changes in labor law important but not enough if not coupled with reforms in other instances? All the answers to these questions will be given by Dr. Salma El Nims, Head of the Gender Equality Section at ESCWA, hosted by Lynn Tehini in this week’s episode of #SheTalks.
Tune in now! and learn about solutions, including an EU-funded project to reinforce women’s economic participation in Jordan.
