Ambassador Surkoš at the EU Press Iftar: “Free press and access to information are fundamental for the functioning of a democracy”

The European Union Delegation to Egypt hosted yesterday May 30, 2018 an Iftar for press and media which is a networking event organised annually. The event provides an opportunity to discuss the main issues in the bilateral relations between the EU and Egypt.

For the occasion, the Ambassador Surkoš announced that “The richness of cooperation is evident in the figure of the total EU aid commitments to Egypt which amount to over EUR 1.3 billion in grants. The total of combined ongoing aid commitments (grants; loans; etc.) of EU Member States, EU institutions, European Financing Institutions (EFI) is EUR 11 billion.”

The Head of the EU Delegation to Egypt also indicated that the protection and promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law are guiding principles of the EU’s external action.
