The municipalities in the Baalbek region of Lebanon face significant environmental challenges, worsened by unique geographic, socio-economic, and political pressures. Issues like water scarcity, waste management problems, pollution, and biodiversity loss have made the region increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
To address these challenges, the Union of Baalbek Municipalities is crafting a comprehensive plan to reduce emissions, improving the climate, and promoting the use of sustainable energy. This effort is part of the European Union-funded Clima-Med project, “Acting for Climate in the Southern Mediterranean” which aims to support regions like Baalbek in combating the adverse effects of climate change.
During a recent meeting, key figures from the region’s municipalities and technical committees gathered to discuss and celebrate this initiative. Ibtisam Al Hariri highlighted the Union’s commitment to sustainable development, stressing the importance of projects that not only improve living standards but also strengthen regional cooperation. Al Hariri also emphasized the critical link between sustainable development and environmental actions, underlining the role of the Clima-Med project in combating climate change and minimizing environmental harm.
Since joining Clima-Med in July 2023, municipalities including Eyat, Maqneh, Hosh Tal Safieh, Majdaloun, and Douris have been actively involved, with hopes for more to join soon.
Projects like Clima-Med, which focus on providing technical assistance and capacity building, and promoting sustainable practices, are essential for improving environmental conditions in cities such as Baalbek. Launched in 2018, Clima-Med aims to enhance energy security and adaptive capacity of partner south Mediterranean countries, to foster their transition to low carbon and climate-resilient economy, thereby contributing to more stable, efficient, competitive and climate-resilient socioeconomic contexts.
