Statisticians met last month in Munich, Germany, to work on a common methodology to assess road transport in the MED countries, inspired by the EU standards. The meeting was organized in the framework of EU-funded MEDSTAT IV project.

The end product of the regional work will be a manual on statistics for road freight transport that will present a synthesis of the existing International and European technical references in this area, describe the local context in each MED country and propose recommendations for rules and standards tailored to the needs in the MED region. The manual is due to be released at the end of May.

The meeting was also the opportunity to address air transport and in particular the statistical systems in the airports.

The MEDSTAT IV project provides expertise and technical support to promote the harmonisation of statistics in line with EU and international standards in 6 domains: business register and business, trade and balance of payments, energy, labour market, migration and transport. It follows on the previous phase implemented over the period 2010-2013.
