The development arm of the European Investment Bank (EIB), EIB Global, has confirmed, at a press conference, that it remains fully committed to Tunisia with € 92 million of new funding granted in 2023, alongside an almost 50% increase in disbursements to projects promoting sustainable, resilient and inclusive economic growth for the benefit of the entire population.

The European Union (EU) bank also provides technical expertise and sector-specific support thanks, specifically to the European Union support fund, in the fields of water and sanitation, transport and power grids.

“Supporting resilient and inclusive economies is at the heart of what we do at the EIB. In 2023, we maintained our commitment to Tunisia by allocating € 92 million to the establishment of innovative educational infrastructures and providing vital support for micro-entrepreneurs. These are key initiatives for the country’s sustainable development and we are determined to maintain and expand this support in 2024. “ stresses EIB Vice-President, Nicola Beer. And she adds “Thanks to the continued backing of the European Union, we are also broadening the provision of our expertise in key sectors for the country, including water, transport and energy. By doing this, we are helping to build a more prosperous future for Tunisia and its people. ”

In 2023, EIB Global granted funding of € 45 million for the ELMED project, an ambitious initiative aiming to establish a 600 MW undersea electricity interconnection between Tunisia and Italy. This 200 km-long link, will facilitate power exchanges, while enhancing cooperation and the energy transition in the Euro-Mediterranean region. This project benefits from an EU investment subsidy of € 307 million.
