In Ramtha, the EU and the AFD – Agence Française de Développement are partnering with the Water Authority of Jordan to build a €100 million EUR new Wastewater Network and Treatment Plant Through the project “Improved access to sanitation services for host and refugee communities in Ramtha and Sahel Houran”.
The project plans to strengthen and extend the sanitation system in the Ramtha and Sahel Houran area with the collection and treatment of wastewater from a population of 180,000 inhabitants by 2030 (i.e. a connection rate of 63% compared to 25% today). A new treatment plant with a final capacity of 22,000 m3/day will be built in two stages, next to the current plant. The project includes the construction of the first stage of the plant (water used of 11,000 m3/day with treatment of the sludge produced) and the installation of four pumping stations and approximately 100 km of network.
A social component will also finance the connection to the collective network and the rehabilitation of sanitary equipment inside homes, allowing 3,200 households among the most vulnerable in the host communities and Syrian refugees, as well as certain public users (schools, health centers), to access a quality sanitation service.
