On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November, the Delegation of the European Union to Algeria has launched an awareness campaign entitled: “Je plaide NON coupable” (I plead not guilty).

The aim of the campaign is to raise the public’s awareness on the issue of violence against women and more particularly the aspect of blaming the victims who often find themselves having to bear the responsibility of the crimes they have suffered.

A 16-day activism will be structured around several actions such as a virtual meeting-debate on “the impact of COVID-19 on gender-based violence”, moderated by feminist activists.

A group of Algerian singers has produced a song entitled “Women” which describes the double punishment of women, assaulted and blamed for the assaults they suffered.

Finally, testimonials of women victims of violence who were encouraged to remain silent were collected and transformed into graphics to be discovered on the social media of the Delegation. Cartoons by the cartoonist Le HIC dedicated exclusively to the campaign will also be published.
