The EU published, after a session of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Monday 18 January, a lengthy statement on the Middle East, in which it outlines both its fears following the deterioration of the situation and its concrete commitment to contributing to a just and final peace settlement.

The Ministers reaffirmed their faith in the two-state solution, with both parties living side by side in peace and security, and promise a special status in relations with the EU to the Israelis and Palestinians. A “package of European political, economic and security support and of a Special Privileged Partnership with the EU” is offered if a peace agreement is concluded. The status of Jerusalem was also mentioned.

In their statement, the ministers said they are currently “deeply concerned by the continuing cycle of violence” on both sides. The EU said it is “strongly opposed all actions that undermine the viability of the two-state solution”.

Both parties are required to make a “fundamental change” in their policies and actions.
