EU-funded SAFEMED IV organised seminar on search and rescue

In the framework of the EU-funded SAFEMED IV project, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) organised for the first time a Seminar on Search and Rescue (SAR) last month in Lisbon, Portugal. The event was organized in collaboration with the Italian Coast Guard and gathered 18 participants from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia.

The main objective of the Seminar was to provide an overview of the international legal framework pertaining SAR, the various level of coordination, notion of planning and coordination of SAR operations, technologies available amongst others. The Italian Coast Guard also shared best practices and lesson learnt from real cases such as the Norman Atlantic.

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) is implementing SAFEMED IV project for technical assistance bringing together national, European and international stakeholders with the aim to raise the safety, security and protection of marine environment standards in the Mediterranean sea, with a view to implement the maritime aspects of the UfM Regional Transport Action Plan 2014-2020.
