The EU Delegation in Jordan brought together civil society, government, Members of Parliament, diplomats and others to celebrate International Women’s Day in downtown Amman. Highlighting the combined efforts to advance women’s rights in Jordan, the EU organised a Bazaar where Jordanian, Syrian and Iraqi women from six different women’s organizations displayed and sold a variety of handmade products. And closing with a reception, inspirational women, including Aya Majali, the captain of Jordan’s football team, and Khawlah Yaseen, leader of an EU-funded Feminist school, were invited to speak about their experience.

Aya Majali emphasized the need to create a more inclusive community for female athletes. By inviting Aya to speak, the EU wanted to shine a spotlight on female athletes in Jordan who do not only dominate their careers, but also inspire women and girls and challenge gender stereotypes.

Khawlah Yaseen underlined the need to promote feminist leadership to combat sexual and gender-based violence in Jordan. Khawlah leads an EU-funded project implemented by Action Aid, which focuses on developing the capacities of young women and their organizations to fight sexual and gender-based violence.

Head of the EU Delegation, H.E Ambassador Maria Hadjitheodosiou, paid tribute to women in Jordan! and to all those who work hard to encourage, support and enable women to reach their full potential. She also noted that International Women’s day is an annual reminder to us all that we have many victories to celebrate, but also many more battles ahead.
