Jordan : EU-funded programme provides final workshop on role of Parliament in budget approval and oversight

On 12 December the EU-JDID ‘Parliamentary Support’ Component, and the Jordanian House of Representatives (HoR), organised the final workshop completing a 20-hour course on the “Role of the Parliament in Budget Approval and Oversight”.

The course aimed to assist the HoR staff in providing more effective support to MPs and the Financial Committee during the budget cycle, budget review and adoption, and budget oversight.

Over 6 weeks (October-December 2019), the participants learned about the budget cycle in Jordan, reading of the general budget -including the budget of decentralized units of government- key economic indicators, the role of parliament in the budget approval and oversight of budget implementation.

Guest lecturers included the senior staff of the General Budget Department, the Ministry of Finance, and the Audit Bureau.

The European Union-funded programme “EU Support to Jordanian Democratic Institutions and Development – EU-JDID” aims at supporting Jordan’s reform process towards consolidation of democracy and at promoting inclusiveness of national policy and decision-making processes. It also intends to enhance women and youth inclusion and to foster a stronger democratic and tolerant political culture.
