Lebanon: EU encourages political parties to reach consensus on new law to allow holding of parliamentary elections

The EU Delegation and EU Ambassadors in Lebanon issued a statement saying the European Union and its Member States were closely following the on-going discussions between political parties in Lebanon to agree on a law governing the next parliamentary elections. “We encourage political parties to make the best use possible of this period in order to reach consensus on a new law,” said the statement.

“Conducting timely, peaceful and transparent parliamentary elections is an important step to ensure the normal functioning of the Lebanese democratic institutions, in the interest and for the benefit of the Lebanese people. A democratically elected Parliament is an important element for the international community supporting Lebanon in its strive for stabilisation and economic development,” said the statement.

The EU reaffirms its commitment to provide support for the preparation and the implementation of timely parliamentary elections in Lebanon.
