It is International Women’s Day and MedMedia is marking the occasion with two special events in Algeria and Lebanon.

Held in Algiers yesterday with the support of the EU Delegation and local partners El Watan, DK news and the Human Development Network (HDN), the first explored ways to strengthen women’s voice in Algerian media.

Gathering 30 participants including experts, rights defenders and media representatives, the meeting underscored the importance of empowering women at work and investing in media training and curriculum development.

These issues will be at the heart of the second event, scheduled in Beirut on Monday 12 March, with the support of the Information Ministry, the Lebanese Association of Women Researchers (Bahithat) and the Lebanese journalists’ union.

With these local partners, the meetings are also launching Khabirat, an initiative promoting the participation of women experts and influencers in news programming through dedicated online platforms. This initiative was launched last year in Morocco, Tunisia, Palestine and Jordan.

MEDMEDIA is an EU-funded programme which aims to facilitate the progress of media reforms in the MENA region by offering policy-makers, regulators, broadcasters and union leaders’ access to relevant experience and know-how from both sides of the Mediterranean.
