EU High Representative for foreign affairs Federica Mogherini stressed that “complete defeat of Da’esh in Syria will require a political solution to the civil war, addressing the main cause of its expansion in Syria”, following the latest terrorist attacks perpetrated in Syria.

“The use of civilians as human shields in Manbij, Syria, and the reported abduction of 2000 people by ISIL/Da’esh from the town shows that civilians are yet again the main victims of Syria’s conflict”, said Mogherini while welcoming the recent military advances against Da’esh by the Global Coalition together with the Syrian Democratic Forces in North West Syria and reaffirming that “the EU will continue to commit its efforts, as part of the Coalition, to its non-military fields of activity.”

In a statement released last week, the EU added to calls for an immediate ceasefire to allow humanitarian access and to restart intra-Syrian talks. High Representative Federica Mogherini and EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides said: “We once again add our voice in full support of the latest UN appeals for a 48-hour humanitarian break in the fighting to allow UN agencies to provide humanitarian assistance to Syrian people and to repair the electricity and water networks.” (Joint Statement 09/08/2016) (EU Neighbourhood Info)
