EU High Representative Federica Mogherini paid her first visit to the EUNAVFOR operation Sophia in Lampedusa, on Friday 15 April 2016. In her remarks made during the visit, she recalled the operation’s launch in April of last year. In reaction to the tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea, the heads of state and of governments of the European Union decided to launch the operation to counter the traffic of human beings, migrants and refugees, and to “dismantle the business model of the traffickers”.
“We managed to have the operation started in a record time of one month. We reached the full operation capacity two months afterwards and, since the beginning of October, we are in phase 2-A which means that we are operating in international waters with one clear priority in mind […] : saving lives”, said Mogherini.
