For the second successive year, I call on all those holding the reins of power to respect the spirit of Eid al-Fitr and allow the observance of this sacred holiday in peace, reconciliation and compassion, which are the essence of Islam. Eid should be a time of joy and celebration; a time to make peace with all neighbours, relatives and friends, and resolve differences.
