The Ministry of Environment of Jordan, with the support of the EU-funded project SwitchMed, developed the National Strategy and Action Plan for Mainstreaming Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) into Agriculture/Food Production, Transport, and Waste Management Sectors.

The strategy, which covers the period 2016-2025, determines three strategic objectives:
  • Establish a national platform for institutionalising the process of mainstreaming SCP into relevant sectors’ plans to ensure coherence, coordination and implementation of SCP activities at the national and regional levels
  • Develop and implement agreed on national SCP Operational Objectives in the country in order to promote and strengthen a circular and green economy and support the regional and national policy frameworks for sustainable development
  • Engage key national stakeholders in developing, practising, and evaluating Sustainable Consumption and Production models and circular economy measures

In addition, it sets several operational objectives under each sector, and suggests actions as well as activities and progress indicators including baselines and targets.

The SwitchMed sustainable consumption and production programme aims to promote a switch of the Mediterranean economies towards sustainable consumption and production patterns and green economy, including low emission development, through demonstration and dissemination of methods that improve resource and energy efficiency. It also seeks to minimise the environmental impacts associated to the life cycle of products and services, and, as opportune, to promote renewable energy. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
