The town of El Guettar in Tunisia and its team in charge of the Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP) development was invited last month by the EU-funded Clima-Med project team to participate in an online workshop in order to identify project ideas to be developed into action sheets on adaptation and mitigation at the local level.

In terms of mitigation, the actions identified concern the sorting and management of waste and pollutant discharges, the production of solar energy for public lighting and an efficient irrigation system using green energy. In terms of adaptation, the actions discussed were mainly, but not only, the protection and preservation measures of the oasis as well as the groundwater and surface hydro resources.

The workshop will be followed by 11 successive workshops with other Clima-Med partner municipalities in Tunisia.

The EU-funded project “Clima-Med – Acting for Climate in South Mediterranean” aims at supporting the transition of partner countries towards sustainable, low-carbon and climate-resilient development. The overall objective of the initiative is to enhance energy security and adaptive capacity of partner countries and subsequently contribute to more stable, efficient, competitive and climate-resilient socioeconomic contexts, while increasing energy sovereignty and reducing CO2 emissions.
