UfM Senior Officials approve three new regional projects bringing the total number to 50

The Senior Officials of the 43 Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Member States met yesterday in Madrid to discuss upcoming regional cooperation activities and initiatives organised in the framework of the UfM.

The Director General for the Maghreb, Mediterranean and Middle East at MAEC, Ms. Eva Martinez, gave a keynote address before opening the floor to discussions on the region’s political issues, namely the Middle East Peace Process (MEPP), Syria and Libya.

The Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) was also the occasion to exchange information on activities and initiatives launched by the UfM Secretariat in the last quarter of 2017. Updates on the UfM Ministerial Conference on Women Empowerment, which will take place on 27 November in Cairo, were shared and will be followed by ad-Hoc meeting organised in Madrid on 17 October to finalise the preparations for the Conference. This Ministerial meeting will be the fourth in 2017, with the second UfM Regional Forum (meeting of the ministers of foreign affairs), the UfM Ministerial Conference on Water and on Sustainable Urban Development, which took place respectively on 23 January, 27 April and 21 May 2017.
