As part of the campaign #16days of activism in the fight against violence towards women, which started on 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against women and girls) under the theme of #HearMeToo, the European Union in Morocco is launching a web series on social networks entitled On the Way to Change. In this series, women and young girls tell their stories about the spiral of violence that they have escaped and the fact that they have recovered their dignity and place in society. It also enables some of the associations that are militating for their rights to speak out.

This initiative echoes the slogan of this year’s UN campaign: #HearMeToo. It has given a voice to victims and civil society organisations that are working to defend the rights of female victims of violence. The webseries On the Way to Change has been produced in several regions of Morocco in collaboration with partner associations benefitting from the support of the European Union between 2015 and 2017 for the implementation of projects fighting against violence towards women, the organisation of women’s rights awareness campaigns and advocacy for gender equality within the framework of the European Union’s support programme for the Government Action Plan for Equality.

It should be noted that violence against women remains one of the most serious violations of human rights in the world. Each year, 13 million women in the European Union are confronted with violence. In Morocco, according to the latest survey conducted by the HPC on the prevalence of violence against women (2009), 62.8% of Moroccan women report that they have been subjected to an act of violence.

The Web-series “On the Path of Change” is available on the social networki accounts of the European Union in Morocco on FacebooktwitterInstagram and YouTube
