A three-day workshop on the gender and development approach was held in Algiers, Algeria, on 22-24 September for the benefit of all the partners of the support programme for local sustainable development and social actions in North West Algeria (PADSEL-NOA), institutions and CSOs, to meet the capacity building requirements of the people in charge of the programme.

Starting from the acknowledgment of the differences in needs between men and women, the gender and development approach suggests to analyse these differences and provides changes to bring so as men and women make decisions together to reach fair and sustainable development.

Although many actions have been carried out to support women in rural areas, the social, cultural and economic conditions and situations of these areas, yet with strong economic potential, haven’t allowed a real emergence of female participation. That is why a new strategy to take care of unemployed women in rural areas is provided, based on capacity building on the gender and development approach.

Other workshops of this type will be held in Tiaret (13 and 14 october), Chlef (20 and 21 october), Ain Defla (26 and 27 october) and Médéa (3 and 4 november).

PADSEL-NOA, (le Programme d’appui au développement local durable et aux actions sociales du Nord-Ouest de l’Algérie [the support programme for local sustainable development and social actions in North West Algeria]) was launched in November 2018. The programme, co-financed by the European Union and Algeria, is targeting 6 wilayas (provinces) (Aïn Defla, Médéa, Chlef, Tissemsilt, Tiaret, Saïda), with the aim of revitalising local territories by stimulating inclusive and sustainable social and economic development. It also supports the creation of income-generating activities in agriculture, livestock farming or even tourism. The focus is on groups of end-users such as local stakeholders, project sponsors, in particular vulnerable and disadvantaged people within the towns, unemployed young people, women and people with disabilities, targeted by the Ministry for Solidarity. The total cost of the programme is €43.5 million, of which 20 million is being contributed by the European Union.
