On Monday 8 February in Beirut, Ambassador Christina Lassen, head of the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon, launched the ‘Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press’.

2016 marks the 11th anniversary of the award, “demonstrating once again the EU’s support for freedom of expression in Lebanon, the Middle East and the Gulf. This award is a symbol of the EU’s commitment to freedom of expression as a foundation for a democratic society”, the EU Delegation said in a statement.

This award, which has been awarded by the European Union since 2006, honours the Lebanese journalist and writer Samir Kassir, who was assassinated in 2005. “Since its creation, the award has attracted more than 1,300 candidates from the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf”, according to the EU Delegation.
