The MedMedia programme (funded by the EU), has reported on its website that consultations for the implementation of a “special mechanism for the freedom of the media in the Arab world” have taken place in Beirut. The event was supported by UNESCO and the Samir Kassir Foundation and, on Thursday 18 February 2016, brought together 20 participants representing media outlets and media support organisations, universities and the National Media Council (NMC).

MedMedia reports that the participants stressed the importance of guaranteeing the mechanism’s independence and said that “the exceptionally difficult situation in the region should not deter the key players from taking the initiative forward”.
