The EU and Jordan adopted their partnership priorities as well as a compact today. Partnership priorities for the coming years include: strengthening cooperation on regional stability and security, including counter-terrorism; promoting economic stability, sustainable and knowledge-based growth, quality education and job creation; strengthening democratic governance, the rule of law and human rights.
Partnership priorities set up a renewed framework for political engagement and enhanced cooperation. They were agreed in the context of the revised European neighbourhood policy and the EU’s global strategy for foreign and security policy. Partnership priorities will be reviewed by the end of 2018.
The EU-Jordan compact foresees an EU commitment of at least EUR 747 million for 2016-2017 including EUR 108 million in humanitarian aid and EUR 200 million in macro-financial assistance. The macro-financial assistance was agreed by the Council and the European Parliament on 14 December 2016. In the follow up to the London conference, the EU and Jordan have already agreed on 19 July to simplify rules of origin requirements to Jordan exports to the EU, provided job opportunities are offered to Syrian refugees, alongside Jordanians. Jordan will also make it possible for over 165 000 Syrian children to access education and increase opportunities for Syrian youth to receive vocational training.
“Jordan is among the EU’s key partners, we cooperate in facing the many crises of our region. In view of the tragic events in Karak the day before yesterday, the EU is also more determined than ever to work together with Jordan in addressing the common challenge of terrorism and violent extremism and to sustain our cooperation on economic and political reform,” said Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
