The official launching of the fourth phase of the partnership of the European Union and the Council of Europe in the Southern Mediterranean, the “South Programme IV”, is to be held today. This high-level online live event will bring together representatives of the Council of Europe, the European Union as well as representatives of national and international institutions and civil society organisations of the Southern Mediterranean.

The event starts at 10:00 CET with welcoming addresses by Verena Taylor, Director of the Office of the Directorate General of Programmes (Council of Europe) and by Henrike Trautmann, Acting Director, Southern Neighbourhood, Turkey, Migration/Refugees and Security issues (DG NEAR, European Union).

It aims to take stock of the co-operation with Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia to promote human rights, rule of law and democratic governance in accordance with European and international standards, established during the previous phases of the programme and present joint objectives for the upcoming phase.

This event will also be featuring two virtual live panels with an interactive format on “How to step-up regional dialogue in the Southern Mediterranean to fight against economic-crime?” and “How to step-up regional dialogue in the Southern Mediterranean to combat violence against women and girls?”

South Programme IV continues assisting Southern Mediterranean countries in building a common legal space together with the EU, with a focus on reforming Southern Mediterranean countries’ legislation and reinforcing their democratic governance institutions as well as accompanying reform processes. Good governance building, strengthening rule of law and respecting, protecting and fulfilling human rights are strong pillars of the South Programme. Additionally, particular attention is given to activities combatting gender-based violence against women and girls.
