Open-source intelligence (OSINF) is a key tool to get insights into criminal activities, globally. As such, being skillful on OSINF is crucial for the and anyone involved in investigations.
In a digital world OSINF is primarily conducted online.
The ordinary citizen can become victims of offenders of any kind, including, in the digital sphere, where fraudsters, drug dealers, traffickers or pedophiles can act locally or from long distance. Since we live in a cyber world, we all leave behind certain digital traces. Criminals are no exception when it comes to online footprint, however skilled they can be. The challenge for police forces at any latitude is to always be a step ahead.
This is why EUPOL COPPS advisors from Germany , Netherlands & Canada  are conducting an OSINF training course for the Department of Information (DOU) of the Palestinian Civil Police (PCP) in Ramallah. The first of three sessions took place on 23 July, the last will be conducted on 6 August.
When interacting with their Palestinian colleagues, EUPOL COPPS experts, themselves police officers, shared about their firsthand experiences and real case scenario, including challenges and lessons learned. The Palestinian officers of the DOU were told of the time their Dutch colleagues were traced back while investigating on a Hell’s Agel’s gang activity, and what was learned out of it in terms of skills enhancement.
Discussions on “big fish” in the criminal sphere being able to disguise themselves better than less dangerous criminals took place during the course.
The dangers of the dark and deep web, from drug and/or weapon trafficking and selling, to the use of search engines, social media, and the importance of minimizing our own digital footprint and reporting are other topics explored over the first slot of the training activity.
When EUPOL COPPS advisor asked for any other question at the end of the lecture, a police officer from Nablus raised his hand and said “Excellent!”
