Mediterranean Energy Regulators Association: Albanian Energy Regulator (ERE) to lead Presidency Board in 2021-2022

Gathered online on 25 November for their 30th General Assembly meeting, the Association of Mediterranean Energy Regulators (MEDREG) Members have elected their new President for the next two years: Mr. Petrit Ahmeti, Chairman of the Board of the Albanian Energy Regulator (ERE).

Three Vice-Presidents will support the new President. Eng. Abdellatif Bardach, President of the Moroccan Electricity Regulator (ANRE) and Eng. Karem Mahmoud, CEO of the Egyptian Gas Regulatory Authority (GASREG), joined the Permanent Vice-President Mr. Stefano Besseghini, President of the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment (ARERA).

Furthermore, the General Assembly meeting reviewed and approved the reports implemented by the Working Groups during 2020. These included an updated analysis of the competences and role of regulators in each MEDREG country; a review of sub-regional integration of electricity cross-border interconnections; a methodology on the role of gas in fostering the energy transition; the condition of vulnerable household consumers; and a study on the role of auctions and self-consumption in developing markets for renewable energy.

In the following term, MEDREG will make a priority to advance in key areas of energy regulation in the region by developing more efficient and compatible regulatory frameworks and by fostering cooperation, information exchange and assistance among its Members.

MEDREG is the Association of Mediterranean Energy Regulators, which brings together 27 regulators from 23 countries, spanning the European Union (EU), the Balkans and North Africa. Mediterranean regulators work together to promote greater compatibility of the regional energy markets and legislation, seeking progressive market integration in the Euro-Mediterranean basin.

MEDREG promotes a transparent, stable and compatible regulatory framework in the Mediterranean Region fostering infrastructure investments, consumer protection, and enhanced energy cooperation. Based on a bottom-up approach, MEDREG acts as a collaborative platform for regulators from the Northern and the Southern shore of the Mediterranean to exchange technical knowledge and good practices while supporting each other to reinforce their regulatory capacity.
