On 6 March ICMPD and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) signed a new cooperation agreement. OFID will co-finance a new ICMPD research project on regional refugee protection and development with a US$100.000 grant.

The study entitled “Assessing the Development Displacement Nexus in Regional Protection Policies” will provide a comprehensive assessment of policy options to address development and displacement in the Middle East region.

At the signing ceremony, that also marked the first formal cooperation of the two organisations, OFID’s Director General Suleiman J. Al-Herbish pointed out why OFID is interested in supporting ICMPD: “While this is the first grant extended by OFID to the ICMPD, since its establishment in 1976, OFID has been very responsive to the plight of victims of all kinds of disasters and conflicts around the world, and attempted to alleviate their suffering through the provision of humanitarian aid.”

ICMPD’s Director General thankfully accepted the grant stating that: “We welcome this new cooperation with OFID as a window of opportunity for both organisations, and on such an important topic. Identifying policy options for refugee displacement and regional protection can provide valuable tools for policy makers in the Middle East region and beyond.”
