The European Union announced, on Tuesday 5 April 2016, its “contribution of approximately EUR 15.3 million to the payment of March salaries and pensions of over 66,000 Palestinian civil servants and pensioners in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. This contribution, which is channelled through the PEGASE mechanism, is being funded by the European Union (EUR 15.0 million) and the Government of Ireland (EUR 0.3 million)”. The EU’s contribution is “part of the 2016 package of direct financial support for the Palestinian Authority announced last month for a total of EUR 170.5 million”, the Office of the European Union Representative noted in a press release.
